| Ecommerce Site: Platterpus Records |
 |
| SITUATION:
Bruce Moore, owner of Platterpus Records, had been developing a Microsoft Access database containing a list of 8500 vinyl records and CD's he had acquired for resale over the years. He was interested in the possibility of using the web as a means to generate sales and needed help getting the site developed. He had already built a basic web site but had no idea how to integrate his ever-changing database into it. |
 |
WHAT WE DID:
Bruce contacted an Intellas member for assistance. The initial version of the site (www.platterpus.com) was developed in 1997 in the infancy of e-commerce. With the existence of advanced development tools at a minimum, the search began to find a platform that would allow the rapid deployment of the site. The Cold Fusion platform developed by Allaire Corporation appeared to be the best tool to use.
The site was reworked to include a search function, so visitors could find the albums, CD's and singles that interested them, and a method for the user to 'buy' the product. This was accomplished strictly by email with a Secure Server interface. No credit card processing was done online for several reasons. First, Bruce wanted to make sure he still had the product in house, since he also sold his products on news message boards and through other web sites. Also, he personally contacted each buyer by email to confirm the order. Credit cards were processed in house using his existing merchant account. |
 |
RESULTS:
The site has been through another overhaul in 1999 containing several new features. An advanced search function was added along with a 'Shopping Agent' that will alert users via email when a record selection matching their search criteria has been added to the database. Today the database contains over 22,000 entries.
Bruce has realized a 1000% increase in annual sales since the site was released in 1997. He has since retired from his day job and spends his time buying record collections and selling them through his site. He has added a partner site called Name That Band (www.namethatband.com) where he holds contests where participants listen to music selections and have to guess the artist. Winners receive gift certificates to the Platterpus site. |
