Distribution Expansion
SITUATION:
The ABC Distribution Company specialized in the distribution of beauty products throughout Louisville area. As business expanded the company opened additional offices, first around state of Kentucky and later in other states around the country. Each additional office required the installation of a 3-5 computer network that was connected to the central office in Kentucky to access the central product database. The in house solution for on going expansion was to add extra computers in the central office for each new office branch opened. ABC Distribution Company used ISDN lines in combination with PC Anywhere software to access the main product database. As the number of branch offices increased it became evident that current solution of adding an extra PC in central office for each branch office was becoming cumbersome and expensive to maintain. An Intellas member was approached to assist in find more efficient network solution to ABC expansion.
WHAT WE DID:
ABC Distribution Company was advised to install Windows 2000 Terminal Server with 2 SCSI 36 GB Hard drives, 4 GB of memory and Dual mother board with two 1 GHz processors. All access now could be done through the Internet and the central production database could be accessed directly. Specialized software for the product database was also purchased that would support Windows 2000 Terminal Server.
RESULTS:
Beyond diminishing the quantity of necessary computers, the changes made for the ABC Distribution Company created some feasible improvements.
All connections go through the Internet and the company can expand without any limits using a common database.
Instant centralized update on the Terminal Server.
Remote administration maintains a fail free environment.
Allows adding and removing accounts via the Internet.
Dramatically diminished expensive trips to customer sites for minor repair.
